OLD WORLD VS NEW WORLD – Who does it best?

There’s a big debate in the wine world about Old World vs New World and who does it best. But what does it all mean? 

In a nutshell: old world wines don’t just follow the rules, they made the rules. Old world wine regions are where modern winemaking traditions first originated. These are the places that exported wines, grapes, winemakers, and traditions into other countries. When we think of old-world wine regions, places like France and Italy are good places to start. 

New World Wines – Rules are made to be broken! New world wines borrowed traditions from other countries to jumpstart their own. Over the years, new world wine regions got clever, and threw out many old ways and developed their own and that’s how new world wine was born! New world wine regions are places like North America, South America, and Australia. 

In our next tasting, we’re battling it out Humble Grape style with an OLD-WORLD vs NEW WORLD duel! 3 old world wines competing against 3 new world wines to see who reigns as the overall wine champion…

MALBEC | FRANCE VS ARGENTINA 

Château les Croisille, La Pierre Malbec, 2019, Cahors, France: Gird your loins and experience Malbec that is more like The Second Coming of heaps of crunchy fruit that have just taken in some invigorating air by the Brighton seaside.

 Passion De Los Andes, Malbec Reserva, 2017, Agrelo, Mendoza, Argentina: A wine so effortlessly elegant with the likes of a smouldering James Dean in a leather jacket smoking a hand rolled fag in the dark corner.

SAUVIGNON BLANC | FRANCE VS SOUTH AFRICA

Domaine Michel Vattan, Cuvée ‘O-P’ Sancerre Blanc, 2020, Loire Valley, France: A crunktastic Sancerre with peaches, lemons, and sea pebbles that KA-POW in your mouth.

Bartinney, Sauvignon Blanc, 2019, Stellenbosch, South Africa: Like trimming the garden on a crisp morning while eating a fruit salad. The fruit for this wine was picked in three stages from high vineyards to get that perfect balance of fruit and acidity. 

 PINOT NOIR | AUSTRIA VS U.S.A 

Winzer Familie Gregor Schup, Pinot Noir, 2014, Thermenregion, Austria: Deep in the heart of the Austrian Wienerwald, in the little town of Guntramasdorf, lies Winzer Familie Gregor Schup, who have lived here for 300 years. They cultivate quality fruits from vines grown close to the Eichkogel mountain, a UNESCO recognised biosphere. It’s fair to say, optimising berries for exquisite wine has become a 6^th sense to the family!
